Our Position
Covers.com is an information site, not a sportsbook. But the picks and reviews we publish lead directly to real-money wagers at licensed operators. That means we share responsibility for helping our readers stay in control — and it's why every operator we recommend has been reviewed against responsible-gaming standards as well as odds and product quality.
Tools Available at Recommended Sportsbooks
Every US and Canadian operator we review provides the following account-level controls. Activate them the moment you register — before you've made your first deposit — and you're far more likely to keep gambling as entertainment.
Deposit Limits
Set daily, weekly and monthly caps on how much you can add to your betting account. Deposit limits are the single most effective control because they act before losses happen, not after. Increases typically require a 24 to 72-hour cooling-off period; decreases apply immediately.
Loss Limits
Cap the maximum net loss you can incur over a chosen period. Unlike deposit limits, these account for winnings — a S$100 deposit, S$60 win, then S$60 loss counts as a S$100 loss towards the cap. Useful for players who redeposit rather than withdrawing wins.
Session Time Reminders
Configure pop-ups at 30, 60 or 120-minute intervals showing time elapsed and net profit or loss. Live betting sessions can slip past hours without you noticing — reminders break the flow long enough to make a rational decision about continuing.
Reality Check & Cool-Off
Take a self-imposed break for 24 hours, three days or one week. Account access is fully blocked for the chosen period, and marketing communications pause. Useful when a session isn't going well but you're not ready to commit to full self-exclusion.
Self-Exclusion
For longer breaks — one month, six months, one year or permanent. Regulated US and Canadian sportsbooks share exclusion lists at the state or provincial level, meaning excluding at one operator often triggers exclusion at all licensed operators in that jurisdiction. Multi-operator exclusion registries include the various state gambling authorities in the US and provincial gaming regulators in Canada.
Warning Signs
Betting has stopped being entertainment when:
- You bet more than you can comfortably afford to lose
- You chase losses with bigger stakes or unfamiliar markets
- You borrow money — from friends, family, credit cards or loans — to bet
- You feel restless, irritable or anxious when not betting
- You hide the extent of your betting from partners, family or colleagues
- Sleep, work or social commitments start losing out to betting
- You believe a big win will fix losses caused by previous betting
Protecting Under-18s (and Under-21s)
Every US regulated sportsbook is legally required to verify age at registration through government databases. Ages vary by state — 21 in most US states, 18 in others and in most Canadian provinces. Any account discovered to belong to a minor is closed with all deposits refunded and any winnings forfeited. Parents on shared devices should apply parental controls such as Google Family Link, Apple Screen Time or third-party filters like Net Nanny.
